Students at NERM 2008

The 37th American Chemical Society Northeast Regional Meeting in Burlington Vermont will provide valuable opportunities for chemistry students studying and carrying out research at universities and colleges throughout the northeast and Canada: Opportunities to meet other students, to present your work, to hear presentations from the top researchers in your field, and to interact with the professional chemists and professors who might provide your next position at a university or in industry. High school students (accompanied by an adult) are also most welcome at NERM2008.
We expect the event to be attended by more than 800 chemists and chemistry enthusiasts from the USA, Canada, and around the world. Highlights for student attendees include:
- An opportunity to meet the rising research stars who are pushing forward the boundaries of chemical knowledge. As the meeting date approaches browse the symposium pages to learn about our exciting line-up of invited speakers. The smaller size of a regional meeting (compared to events such as the MRS, APS, AIChE, and ACS National meetings) provides a real opportunity to discuss your chemistry interests with these people.
- An opportunity to present your research results: 20% of the oral presentation slots in our technical program are available for graduate student presentations. Papers for oral presentation will be selected based on the quality and relevence of your submitted abstract. Graduate and undergraduate researchers can also present at the poster session - the main networking event of NERM2008.
- An opportunity to develop the "soft skills" that are key to your career success: The American Chemical Society is an acknowledged leader in careers and professional development. A range of careers workshops and professional development workshops will be available at NERM2008 (there is no additional cost for for NERM2008 attendees, but space is limited and pre-registration is required for some of these popular events).
- An opportunity to learn about new areas of chemical endeavor: Chemistry is a broad subject and some of the most exciting discoveries are made at the boundaries between different fields. Many of the symposia at NERM2008 feature overview presentations. You can discover a new area you would like to explore, or a new perspective on your current research. The overview lectures will be particularly valuable for students considering possible directions for their future studies.
- A unique opportunity to learn about the world of industrial chemistry and to meet representatives of local and national industry by attending the Symposium on Industrial Chemistry and Innovation.
- Social activities including our Chemistry
Comedy Night, tours of IBM and of Ben and
Jerry's, and our Chemistry Cruise.
