The first “hands across the border” of American-Canadian synthetic chemists occurred at the 2004 NERM symposium in Rochester. It received accolades from participants and the ACS and CSC Divisions of Organic Chemistry (DOCs) in general but especially for highlighting the excellent young organic chemists in the upper NY state and Ontario areas.
This symposium will continue in this aim with a slight geographical shift east. It will provide the opportunity – and hopefully act as a continuing catalyst for regional meetings along the border - for selected young and established American – Canadian synthetic organic chemists to present and their recent research in synthetic method development.
A second, equally important aim, is to allow graduate students to participate and to present talks and posters. A final reason is to foster closer cooperation between the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry (DOC) and the CSC counterpart throughout the neighbouring countries.
SOMAB 2008 includes a joint session with the NERM2008 Green
Chemistry symposium on C-H bond activation,
a joint session with the Medicinal
Chemistry Symposium, and a joint session with the
General Organic Chemistry sessions.
