Network and find collaborators
“Collaborative interaction, considered by many to be the 'elan vital' of research,
provides the spark or inspiration to head in new or unexpected directions,”
Mary Beth Gardiner, The Right Chemistry, HHMI Bulletin, Winter 2005
“The current scientific era is characterized by interdisciplinary research
with much of the promise of future work occurring at the interstices between
traditional scientific disciplines........Approximately 40 percent of awards
go to proposals with two or more PIs, a figure that has more than doubled
in the past 20 years.”
Dr. Arden L. Bement, Jr.
Director National Science Foundation, Testimony Before the Research
and Science Education Subcommittee House Science and Technology Committee,
March 20, 2007
"Once, people said that you are what you know. Then came the social network
researchers, and said that you are who you know. Now, it seems that you are
who you can reach."
The Institute for the Future, Future Now weblog, November 8 2005.
One of the objectives of the ACS Northeast Regional Meeting (NERM2008) is to encourage communication and collaboration between researchers in different fields and at different institutions within our region.
- Our special topic symposia will feature overview lectures providing an introduction to each area, explaining the jargon, and "lowering the barrier" for symposium attendees who are not already experts in the field so that they can fully appreciate all the research presentations
- If you are presenting an oral paper, you are invited to ALSO participate in the poster session (select "oral and poster" when you submit your paper). This will provide an opportunity for further discussion of your work. Researchers from other fields, who were unable to attend your oral presentation due to their participation in different symposia, will have the opportunity to learn about your work.
- Tuesday afternoon at NERM2008 is networking time. Participate in one of the organized tours or trips, or get together with some of the chemists you met at the poster session and explore downtown Burlington. Spend some time getting to know possible future collaborators.
- Locate your future employees, postdocs, or graduate students: NERM2008 will attract the brightest chemists who are looking for employment or considering graduate school in the northeast. If you are job hunting, consult our careers page to learn about the special programs and events that are available to you at NERM2008
