Chemistry Educators at NERM 2008

NERM2008 will have a special focus on chemistry education.
We are planning two hands-on workshop for school teachers (and home-school parents). Preregistration is required (register for these workshops when you register for the NERM2008 meeting).
- Monday June 30th. Adventures in Chemistry and Physics: An Interactive Hands-On Forensics Workshop.
- Wednesday July 2nd. Polymers: an Interactive Workshop featuring the Polymer Ambassadors
We will honor the 2008 the recipiant of the ACS Northeast Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching. The award will be presented at our conference dinner and chemistry cruise on Wednesday evening.
The Chemical Education Symposium will feature presentations from education innovators teaching at all levels. One session will focus on Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL). We invite chemistry educators to submit a paper sharing their insights, results and experiences.
We have two workshops for college level educators:
- Opportunities and Challenges in Chemical Health and Safety
- Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) workshop (for high school and college level educators, preregistration required)
Many other NERM2008 technical symposia will include introductory lectures providing high level overviews of these "hot topic" fields of research. Several will feature sessions designed to be particularly relevant to chemistry educators including:
- The Chemistry Enthusiasts Program
- A session on the use of computers and the internet in chemistry education in our Computers in chemistry symposium
- Special symposia on 21st century energy and environmental chemistry providing fascinating insights into the ways that chemistry can contibute to critical issues in our society
- An opportunity to learn about and discuss policy, education, and funding issues in our chemistry and policy forum
- Presentations on the history of chemistry and the people who made it happen
Special registration rates are available for school teachers, registration includes all NERM2008 activities except the chemistry cruise, and also participation in the teachers workshop on Sunday. High school students may also attend at a significantly reduced registration rate.
